This poster is a perfect gift for the gardener or orchardist in your family. It's includes a reproduction of the historic Green's Nursery Catalogue from 1912. The vividly-coloured illustrations were typical of the time, when fruit tree nurseries were keen to attract new customers interested in planting small or full sized orchards on their properties.

In addition to the front and back covers, this poster highlights a page from the catalogue featuring the Burbank plum. This was a hugely popular cultivar at the time (and it's still available today) which was bred by Luther Burbank, a horticulturalist and plant breeder from the turn of the 20th century who was seen as a "plant wizard" at that time. In addition to the Burbank plum, Luther Burbank also introduced hundreds of new varieties of fruit, flowers and vegetables including the Shasta daisy and Russet Burbank Potatoes.

Another page featured in the orchard has an illustration of a "dwarf pear tree hedge" which was a precursor of today's modern high-density orchards in which dwarfing fruit trees are grown close together and supported by a trellis. It's lovely to think that in those days, you could buy 23 pear trees for just $4.20!

Heirloom catalogues like this one give us a glimpse into history, by showing us what types of fruit trees and berries previous generations enjoyed. Many of these heirloom cultivars are still available at specialist fruit tree nurseries today. For a listing of many of those fruit tree nurseries in Canada and the United States, order OrchardPeople.com's Fruit Tree Nursery Resource List.
